Sharon Carr names her child after her late husband Robert

March 2024 · 3 minute read

A widowed mother-of-two who captured the heart of Australians after she lost her husband weeks before giving birth to her third child has celebrated her first Christmas without her husband.

Sharon Carr lost her husband Robert Carr when she was 38 weeks pregnant and upon her newborn’s birth - although initially baffled - has named her son in honour of his father, Robert.

Ms Carr appeared to be in high spirits despite having a tough year caring for a newborn and two other children, including Ollie who suffers from both leukemia and Down syndrome.

But despite the public's generosity which helped raise money for the family, the grief and stress is still apparent, reported A Current Affair

'She's a lot better now, however a couple months ago it got a little bit difficult..she has very little time to be herself,' said Ms Carr's father.

The children are also struggling to accept their father is no longer with them.

‘He [Ollie] doesn't realise he’s gone and often I’d go to visit my brother-in-law and he’d think he’s there...he'd say Dad, Dad...he'd think he's there helping David [Ms Carr's brother-in-law].’

Juggling between three children, Ms Carr is yet to feel 'over the moon' having days where she struggles to get out of bed.

'Money can't replace Robert can it...three years down the track, five years down the track, ten years down the track it's never going to end that pain,' said her sister Nicole.

Earlier this year Australians helped raise $1.5 million for the family in hopes of easing pressure on the family.

With the money, Ms Carr has managed to pay off her mortgage, purchase a suitable family car and has placed money in a trust fund for the children.

'The money has been an incredible help because we've been able to stay in our family home, in our community,' said Ms Carr.

The donations from the Australian public helped relieve the financial stress for the single mother.

'She can grieve without having that money worry,' said Ms Carr's sister Nicole.

Although the stress is visible, Ms Carr didn't fail to thank everyone for the support she received from the general public.

'We're very overwhelmed with the kindness of people and how much they gave and all the comments that were so kind and supportive and empathetic it's not just the money it's the kindness.
