Dwayne Johnson Firmly Believed Trish Stratus Could be the Female Rock

May 2024 · 3 minute read

Trish Stratus is one of the most decorated female wrestlers in the world. The blonde bombshell was more than just a pretty face in an era defined by bra and panties matches and female wrestlers posing for Playboy. According to one of her former colleagues, she could’ve been the female Rock.

The Rock saw Trish Stratus as his female equivalent

That former colleague is none other than The Rock himself. Dwayne Johnson was an Attitude Era icon, and his contribution to wrestling is so great, people still consider him one of the best to lace up a pair of boots. During the Attitude Era, The Rock often crossed paths with Trish Stratus.

Stratus and The Rock had an on-screen relationship and the People’s Champion even saved her from the wrath of Vince McMahon. In one memorable segment, The Rock saved Trish from being utterly humiliated by Mr. McMahon. Speaking on Oral Sessions with Renee Paquette, the WWE Hall of Famer talked about how The Rock claimed she could’ve been the female Rock.

“I guess I knew I wanted to be the best at what I was doing. But also you have to remember this was a time where there wasn’t really women doing it. So you wouldn’t be like ‘that’s what I want to do.’ I maybe could look to The Rock and say ‘that’s what I want to do. And is that realistic? I’m not sure, because it seems like it’s never really been done so far.” (H/T Wrestling Inc)

“Then I remember The Rock said to me one day ‘you know, you can be the female Rock.’ And I was like ‘oh my god. Okay, I’m going to do that. Yes.’ So I just knew that it was my job then, to be the best that I could be. And that would entail training and performing at my peak every time and outdoing my last performance.”

Status’ amazing WWE career

Female talent in WWE had a hard time prior to the women’s evolution. Even in the 2000s and early 2010s, female talent were subjected to a more voyeuristic type of wrestling, which mainly focused on them being attractive and not athletic. As for Trish, she broke that stereotype as early as 2000.

Like most female wrestlers in the Attitude Era, Trish started off as a valet to Val Venis. She proved her mettle as a performer by taking a sick table bump from the Dudley Boyz, after which her career skyrocketed. Stratus won her first title in WWE at Survivor Series 2001 in a six-pack challenge.

She went on to become a seven-time Women’s Champion, a record broken solely by Charlotte Flair. Status retired in 2006 after beating Lita in a hometown classic at Unforgiven. She surprised fans with various appearances, including at PPV’s like WrestleMania 27, Evolution 2018 and of course, SummerSlam 2019, her last wrestling match in WWE.
